Student Assessment Bank Released at Catalyst

Tomorrow is the BC Science Teachers conference – Catalyst - and I'm looking forward to catching up with folks who will be attending. For those not able to make the day, just a quick note to let you know a bit about our new STUDENT ASSESSMENT BANK

As you know, we have already have an online professional learning community at www.bcscienceinteractions.com. This site is open and free to all teachers. This has been an exciting community to watch grow as we now have over 300 educators connected and able to share information and ideas.

For teachers using our BC Science CHEMISTRY 11 or field testing our Newton's Laws chapter in BC Science PHYSICS 11 we also have Digital Teacher Support in a WIKI. Each wiki contains an eReader and pdf file for each unit or chapter. Also available are answer keys, relevant links, simulations and other ideas. If you register to become a member of the wiki you can also upload and share your ideas and materials you have developed. The wikis can be accessed at:

BC Science Physics 11 - http://bcsciencephysics11.wikispaces.com/

STUDENT ASSESSMENT BANK

The piece that has been missing in the BC Science program is support for students. To address this need, we are releasing the Beta version of what we code name Edvantage Science. Using the Moodle engine we have created an online quiz and discussion forum for students to access. Over the next two months we will be adding more resources. The goal of the site is to support students in a manner that gives them a customized learning experience based on what they need to know at any particular time. For example, upon completing a quiz, a student may realize they are having troubles with understanding momentum and impulse. Edvantage Science would provide the necessary digital support to help focus their learning needs to this specific problem. And because each student has a unique login, each student can access different material depending on their needs.

This is an exciting addition to our program and I hope you and your students are able to try Edvantage Science and provide us with feedback over the next couple of months. This includes a new name for the site!

For those interested, here are the steps to accessing the site:

1. Go to: www.edvantageinteractive.com/sciencemoodle/

2. Register as a first time user. You will need a valid email address to verify your account.

3. Validate account and login to Edvantage Science site

4. Select (or search) for either Chemistry 11 or Physics 11

5. Enter enrolment key: bcscience (Note, it is the same key for both courses)

You now have access to your course

************************* FAQ ***********************

1. Why is there a registration and an enrolment key?

For the quiz section to work properly, the system needs to identify each user as unique. To do this you need a login and password. The enrolment key gives you access to the content in the course.

2. Could I set this up so I can see my students results and add additional content.

Yes, this is possible. Please contact us to discuss.

3. Is any of the information collected public?

No, the system is designed to protect all users data and is never shared.
