A Collection of Chemical Demonstrations to Support the BC Chemistry 11 Curriculum at H. J. Cambie Secondary School

October 21, 2011 from 10:45am to 11:45am
This workshop will focus on presenting a selection of relatively easy and safe chemical demonstrations that BC grade 11 chemistry teachers can take advantage of to supplement their lesson plans. From reaction types and solution chemistry to chemical bonding and organic chemistry, there should be something that most teachers can take back and use in their classes immediately. Of course there will also be draws for chemical prizes at the end of the workshop!

It's quite something to see all of the tiles submitted by schools across Canada, 20 US states, and 14 other countries together in one table. Here's the link:  http://www.chemistry.uwaterloo.ca/iyc/periodic-table-project(St. Thomas More Collegiate contributed element #100 (Fermium) to the project.)Enjoy!See More

"That's pretty much how we do it at our school too Cheri. The same protocol that was in place for the Foundations 10 book should (and I'm sure will) work equally well for the new Chemistry 11 WorkText."

What is your favourite thing about teaching science?
The daily interaction with the students and the ability to positively affect their lives with the wonder of science.
The best advice I'd give a new science teacher would be...
Always make the students your priority and make it evident to them that you're doing it. Try to put yourself in their shoes when you design a lesson and teach it. Take advantage of any help, advice, expertise and resources available from veteran teachers as you begin your career, but try to develop your own style, use your own personal strengths and talents, and be yourself in the classroom. Use humour whenever you can, and pass along your excitement for the subject because it will be contagious.
I'd like to connect with other members about...
Senior Chem mostly, but any science teaching issue is fine

Hey Chris - welcome to the new Chemistry group. Maybe we can get some mole unit conversations happening here in the next little while.
