How to be sure EVERY student is PREpared for LAB. (A timely topic to start the year.)

Speaking with other science teachers, I've found we all share a few common problems.  One is trying to ensure that all of our students have prepared for the day's lab.  Do they read and highlight the…Continue

Awesome FREE On-line Resources (VSEPR and more)! at H.J. Cambie Secondary in Richmond

October 21, 2011 to October 22, 2011
Hi Gang:  Just wanted to let all the chem folks know I will be at Catalyst showing how to add the Jmol program to all the other plays in the VSEPR section of your playbook.  If you don't teach VSEPR per se, there are many other applications for Jmol.  So come on along.  (If time permits, and it probably will, I will show a number of other great resources I like to use.)

"That's pretty much how we do it at our school too Cheri. The same protocol that was in place for the Foundations 10 book should (and I'm sure will) work equally well for the new Chemistry 11 WorkText."

Paying for Worktexts...

I decided to post the message I recently sent to Chem members in the discussion section to encourage more chat re: how folks intend to use the text, and perhaps more importantly, how they intend to pay for it.  Here it is:Our school has been successfully having students purchase worktexts/workbooks since the since Foundations first came out.  When fees became a no-no, it was a little tougher, but it's never really been a problem.  We simply indicate day one that we intend to use the…See More

Kinetics of Hydrogen Peroxide Lab

Hi Gang:  Here is a PDF of the Lab we did at the conference.  As promised, I've included some graphs (Conc vs time and ln Conc vs time).  Be sure to have your students plot 1/Conc vs time as well to check for second order.   Just a reminder to expect a half life between 12 and 25 minutes.  The peroxide is 0.6% (don't forget the "dead baby" zero) and the permanganate is 0.020 mol/L (very carefully standardized...ho, ho, ho).  Have fun!!See More
